Ciprofloxacin second-generation fluoroquinolone with a broad spectrum of activity. It is used to treat number of bacterial infections which include infections in the urinary tract, abdomen, skin, prostate, and bone, as well as other types of infections. Many bacteria can grow resistant against Ciprofloxacin due to which it can’t be treated with same drug.

Ciprofloxacin is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections like infections of bones and joints, endocarditis, gastroenteritis, malignant otitis externa, respiratory tract infections, cellulitis, urinary tract infections, prostatitis, anthrax, and chancroid.

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic in the class of fluoroquinolones. This type of antibiotic is bactericidal i.e., it directly kills bacteria and not blocked enzymes that are needed for bacteria survival. Of the fluoroquinolone class, ciprofloxacin is the most potent against gram-negative bacilli bacteria. Ciprofloxacin also has effectiveness against some gram-positive bacteria. Ciprofloxacin is the most active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, among the quinolones. Ciprofloxacin is one of the few oral antibiotics able to treat P. aeruginosa infections.
